    Getting slides scanned

..a quick follow-up to the post I just made about getting films processed..
I'd also like to get some colour slides scanned. I shoot a lot on slides, and ultimately will probably get myself a scanner. However, I'd like to see some results first.
Can anyone recommend either a good place in London to get slides scanned - or a good postal service?

    many thanks,
    Richard.

I have found Peak Processing in Sheffield to be reliable both for pocessing and scanning. www.peak-imaging.com

My London-based recommendations are long gone. Joe's Basement, anyone?

    Not London, but postal.

I was well impressed with RGB labs at Middlesbrough. The only problem with their work is that I am no longer satisfied with scans from my Epson 4990!

Get yourself a good scanner, you'll save a ton in the long run, actually even in the short run! The scanning services I have seen in London area so far have been pretty poor and unreliable! the standard scans are usually low res. and the prices not really worth the effort. The minute you ask for decent res. scans the prices go through the roof. In a couple of cases they didn't even bother to clean the scanner glass and what I got back was very dirty scans which I had to take back, and this was in a reputable pro establishment, I am not going to name names here... Get an Epson 750 or 700 you'll be fine!

if you have over a thousand slides (keepers) then high quality scans from mail order will ruin you, also, many are not that high quality and will still need lots of work.
I use Minolta Dimage V no longer made but capable of high quality, many dots per inch and multiple oversampling, digital ICE - at painfully slow speeds, takes a tray of five slides or six negs. Some people reported reliability probes, cross fingers mine is so far OK but the software is no longer compatible with latest MACS, have to use an old PC, pain.

Some threads have reported good results with Epson `flatbeds' V750 and up.

NIkon 5000 with ED glass is superb, quicker than Minolta and still a few left around.
BUT the slide feeders etc are expensive extras, without them, loading is slow and painful. Also watch it the old Nikon was not very good - source = a friend of mine has been this route.
The Super Coolscan from Nikon takes up to 2 1/ square negs but is ober £2500.

I haven't tried yet but an 'Ohnar' slide copier could fit on a T2 mount on a good dig camera, might be quicker to use and, depending on cam' be acceptable quality.

Summary; if you only want archives on screen, a flatbed or Ohnar should do. If you want approaching the original quality be prepared for hundreds of hours with a second hand Nikon ED still a lot of money. If you only need snaps, go medium res with a mail order (agree with other comments about labs but they are always cheaper if you get the CD when the slides are processed)

I did try Fuji process and scan service - awful so poor the cd's went in the bin, at £6 each.....

Good luck, let everyone know how you get on please.

What about slide copiers you can attach to dSLR lens?

It seems to be the fastest way of getting slides into a computer. On some I believe you can do optical cropping.

yes the Ohnar allows a bit of shift but less negative = less quality always, I guess a really good full frame DSLR might give good results. We enter the doors of, what is your quality threshold? The guys and gals out there may help
