    E420 A/S priority lag???

    Hi,

I recently bought a e420 and have noticed that there is a horrific (5 seconds up) lag on the aperture/ speed priority settings (well, actually I am not sure about the others, as I generally only use auto and those 2 functions).

For an auto everything picture the lag is usually about 1/2 a second.

Is this normal or have I got a lemon?

Please help me, it is driving me utterly mad and I hate the fact that this problem is making me miss so many opportunities.

    Sounds odd...

I presume when you say lag you mean a delay between pressing the shutter button and the picture being taken. Does this happen all the time? I know if I have redeye reduction on on my Canons this causes a delay but that only occurs when the flash is in use.

Are you using Liveview or the proper viewfinder. Liveview tends to be somewhat slower than to take pictures than using the optical finder but even then 5 seconds would not sound normal.

When using the optical viewfinder rather than liveview I would expect the camera to take pictures with no noticeable delay. The sequence is usually a half press on the shutter button to focus and as soon as focus is confirmed the button is pressed fully down and the picture is taken more or less immediately. There is a minimal lag - probably less than 150 milliseconds - between the button being pressed and the shutter opening caused by the mirror having to move but this is pretty much unnoticeable. Anything longer is out of the ordinary I'd say.

One thing to try is to put the camera into manual focus and then try taking a picture once you've focused the shot. If the delay disappears then this would point to an issue with the AF system not finding focus properly - most cameras won't normally take a picture in AF mode until the lens has focused. This could be a lens or camera issue which may be difficult to pin down unless you have more than one lens.

I'd check the timer and also mirror lock up ('anti-shake' I think in the menus).
    Thanks

As the shutter lag is in the miliseconds are you sure you are not confusing a slow shutter speed (due to low light)with shutter lag?
Keep on snapping and catch the moment if you can.
