Winding it on - making sure its on

Ok thought I had 36 little shots on the film camera (hardly ever used it) but when I opened it up the film had not advanced a single notch.....
So is there a set way to attach the film so it does - At the moment I just copied the attachment method used by the last film in the camera, the end of the film reel folded over and wrapped round the metal line on the turny thingy that it wraps round.
However its clear I am missing some step as this has failed several times now (I rised losing frames and opened it up after taking a few test shots).

For refrence the camera is a Praktica M42 screwmount older model (I forget its make).

Well if it's an L (LTL, MTL, LLC, VLC, L, LB, EE, PLC and so on) one, with the two wire thingies, it's utterly simple - push it under one of the wires, and wind on a little with the back still open to prove it's caught - possibly the most foolproof loading method of all manual-wind SLRs.

When you have loaded the film and are winding on to frame 0, check to see if the rewind crank is turning - generally a good indicator of there being tension in the film (ie it is being wound on).

Indeed, a much better system than the usual slotted take-up spool.

A user manual (for the LTL3) can be found here.
