Another one from my trip to Scotland in April:

I'm wondering if it might be better with a bit cropped off the top and the left side?

Certainly cropping the top will concentrate on the more interesting clouds-and lose the jet contrail! The left side I'm not so sure about-reducing the body of water may work as at the moment I think the photo has 2 focal points-the water and the distant mountains-almost as if there are two separate photographs here
Hmmm... I hadn't thought of that. I'll have more of a play.
Thanks for the suggestion.
OK, I've tried 2 crops, sort of left and right.

I think I prefer the first one, with the Loch, but I'd like to hear others' views. Thanks!
i think i prefer the first crop too
there's a definite fore/middle/background, and i like the way your attention snakes though to the mountains in the distance
First one for me too, seems a bit more balanced compositionly.

I prefer the first crop as well, having seen it. The second crop has turned into a series of fore/middle/back planes, whereas the presence of the loch links and leads the eye in![]()
Cheers, everyone. I think another thing about the first one is that the darker trees in the bottom left balance the white cloud in the top right.
Maybe with more practice at post capture cropping I'll get better at composing in the viewfinder!![]()
