Is my new Nikon 70-300 VR lens faulty?

I have just received the Nikon 70-300 vr as a gift. When I have the lens extended and the shutter part depressed(for focussing) with the VR switched on I can "feel" the motor vibration constantly in the palm of my hand and it continues until about 2 seconds after I release the shutter. Could anyone tell me if this is normal please?

I already have the 18-200VR and I don't feel this vibration at all, even at full extension.
Would be grateful for an answer from anone who is experienced with this lens.
    Thanks

That's normal for that lens (well, mine's done it since day one!). The noise and slight vibration is the VR system working. If you're worried about it, take it back to the shop and see what they say - maybe try another example of the same lens to compare the vibration.

Thanks guys - I feel happier now. I wonder why I never felt it on the 18-200VR - maybe because its smaller and there's less glass to move about?

It is shorter and the glass has to move less to achieve the stabilisation.

Same experiences here; the vibration seems to get less with age; I've had my lens for about two years now
