Hello
Advice required please for antivirus software for a Netbook (Samsung NC10).
It came with a preinstalled McAfee SecurityCentre 60 day trial. Has anyone had any experience of it? Should I keep this or download/buy something else.
Many thanks.

Being tight, I use Avast on all my 'puters - 1x desktop, 1x lappy and 1x netbook. All seems to be well with them all and the software's free!

It's probably o.k., it's installed so they can upgrade to the full version after 60 days (for a nice fee). There's plenty of free AV apps out there. Most times I've installed AVG, seems to do a job. The free version doesn't include things like ID protection, but they seem only to exist to make people paranoid about security.
If you're careful where you browse, you can get away with AVG* and the built in firewall.
*or other free AV solutions
I used AVG on my Win XP computer but it didn't like Vista when I was forced to upgrade by PC failure, and the Vista PC has Avast on it. My netbook... I actually went out and bought Kaspersky for it (I have an external DVD drive for it).
I'm not convinced that any package will be 100% effective but so far I have been "lucky" to escape infection.
Too many cameras, too many lenses.......
Thanks for the replies.
It seems as though AVG and Avast are the most popular free antivirus's. I'll have a look at them.

Avast Free Home gets my vote too....along with SpywareBlaster, Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware I feel safe surfing anywhere.

then if you ever pick up something, malwarebytes is good for removing most

Nights were a real drag, thankfully work's on 2 shifts now [day/back] so more time to do things... If only photography were higher up the pecking order ;-)
AVG and Avast are not good with trojans and the same goes for the very expensive Norton and McAfee packages. ID security features are far from being there to make people paranoid as keyloggers (they log your key strokes) don't have to necessarily be installed in your system to work.
My best advice is get the best thing out there which is Kasperky Internet Security, it puts very light load on the system and it deals very well with trojans. Norton has gotten rid of it's heavy system load demons but it is still not great with trojans.
Obviously you will end up sharing files between your Netbook and other machines, yours or others, so you will want the best protection you can have. Go Kaspersky matey!
Hope that helps,
That's in my arsenal too....I just keep forgetting about it.then if you ever pick up something, malwarebytes is good for removing most

They are not the best at "removing" trojans....but I've yet to get a trojan or other similar little nasty since I made the switch from Norton to Avast.AVG and Avast are not good with trojans

I popped into PC World today to have a hands on look at the netbooks. While I was there an uninspiring sales girl was 'helping' a lad and his mum buy a netbook. I say 'helping' all she was doing was reading the notes next to each netbook out aloud, but what she was also doing was trying to put the hard sell in getting them to sign up for Nortel anti-viral software while they were at it. They've obviously got soem sort of incentive going, but her technique was distinctly lacking and a quick nod and a wink from me when her back was turned saw them buy a plain vanilla netbook without any exhorbitant software.

That's almost my point. You won't know until you have ran Kaspersky through. I had Norton and found 26 trojans living happily in my system until Kaspersky scanned. And at work, I have seen the same and worse with Avast and AVG. With Norton, the only really good version is the Corporate Edition, I have heard from top people. And guess how much it can set you back? Over £400!They are not the best at "removing" trojans....but I've yet to get a trojan or other similar little nasty since I made the switch from Norton to Avast.AVG and Avast are not good with trojans
I agree.I had a bad case of trojans a while ago and malwarebytes sorted it.then if you ever pick up something, malwarebytes is good for removing most

Complete hogwash. I have NO trojans or any other little nasties BECAUSE of Avast. That's almost my point. Kapersky is hugely popular here in Germany.....so much so that I needed to clean (with Spybot, CCleaner and Spywareblaster) my neighbor's laptop and my wife's friend's PC (both have Kapersky) because they were infected with dialers and trojans.
Sure Kapersky is better than Norton IMO...but there are many better than both....like NOD32 for example....and Avast IMO.
