Re: POLL - The unofficial wedding photographer

Mangage a heavy camera with a headful of whisky? Always find that bit challenging. Then there's keeping the rellies hands off the kit who have also got heads full of whisky and kids full of tartrazine and sticky hands.

Then there's trying to get friendly with the bridesmaids with a massive protrusion sticking out the front - is that a zoom lens in your pocket or are you just pleased to see me?

Naa, I'll take a few snaps on my compact for memory's sake and leave the rest to the pro. With a photographer's mindset I become an observer of the wedding, rather than a participant and it's less fun.

It has to be said though, an extra heartbeat checking the viewfinder and arranging the composition makes a huge difference to the quality of any snap.

Re: Heck, I've even been the "official" wedding photog and that was even

I reckon its nice to have a variety of views. The official ones for your pristine album, and the more family ones which might contain the family in-jokes, of uncle Tim up to his old tricks etc. In these the quality isn't paramount and this is where the unofficial tog is useful.

However, what never ceases to amaze me is the requests you get for advice on forums, from "official" togs and some other "professionals" on basic technique.

You know the sort of thing:

" Hi, I'm doing my first wedding next week and they are paying me quite a lot of money so I want to get it right. What lens/flash should I use and how do I get the right exposure to keep detail in the dress. I have only used fully auto until now etc "

I have also seen "pros" asking for advice on their studio set up and looking for really very basic advice while taking people's money. Most depressing.

It pains me to think some poor sod is paying these bozos for their services

Re: POLL - The ‘unofficial’ wedding photographer

We gave all the guests a disposable camera at our wedding and I look at the results from these far more than the 'official' photos.

So the results from the unofficial photographers bring more of a smile to me (especially when I think that they cost a fraction of the fee for the pro )
