Or if you have a Pentax on the table they'll suspect you are just wasting their time, having just decided to think about getting married well after all your friends are married, and may or may not be getting married at all, and if you are, possibly within the 'next 12 months' or you may just call it off and decide to live together. Maybe.

or done it as the wedding present.
Done that, and to be honest would rather not do it, but would reckon to be well enough equipped and confident in doing the job, only if I have to

Re: POLL - The unofficial wedding photographer

this is simple for me the biggest NO there is, and i have used that answer on more than one occasion, people seem to assume that if you got more than a compact you are some sort of expert
i enjoy doing what i do and even though i have done some nice stuff that others have commented on, i do not have the confidence neither do i wish to impart pressure on myself

as daft as this seems i frequently tog some bands for local club purely for them to have a record of events, have recently done a couple of collage/montage for them, couple of the bands like them so much that they had a copy and one has asked me to do one for them and if it turns out alright they might use it for an album cover, yes i know i am flattered but all of a sudden i feel pressure even though they are not assuming anything......its just me which is daft
    Simply enjoy photography
Take more crap than good pics but the good ones make me feel good
No more than an amateur so feel free to ignore anything i say

It's dealing with the people I'd struggle most with, especially if I don't know them well.

No "Gift o' the Gab" here. And I suspect you do need a fair bit of it to get the right shots.

Re: POLL - The unofficial wedding photographer

I am sure many of us have done hundreds of weddings, so of course we would feel confident doing an unofficial one.

However we probably would not care to do so, it would be too much like a busman's holiday.
I have some times taken shots at friends weddings that I know the photographer will not cover.

I recently took shots of an amazing array of all the flowers at one church. Then took a picture in close up of the brides flowers only showing her hands. The official photographer who was faffing about at the time, seemed dumbstruck that any one would want to do that.

    Sorry, you've lost me!?!
    Could you re-phrase that?

Always said I wouldn't do one, until a friend asked me. Though it's a blessing rather than a wedding - but it's at a church so much the same (the real wedding is in Cuba).

Apart from the flowers against her dress I only showed her hands.... Better?

Re: POLL - The unofficial wedding photographer

What amazes me these day is how long wedding photographers take to shoot a picture.
We always took a Dresser/assistant with us. to see to hair and dresses and the arrangement of the bride and groom's arms and flowers in the formal shots. The whole formal group and close up shoot, rarely took more than twenty minutes.
It seems that today that the taking of photographs is the event itself.

I agree Terry, I always use a hair and dress 'fluffer' usually Mrs P. who then acts as 'second shooter' for the rest of the day. The biggest problem these days is having to produce a bunch of 'proofs' before the 'evening do' begins.
No longer a bag of cameras over your shoulder with a tripod in hand you need a bl@@dy skip to carry computer, printer etc. - and a damn good relationship with the venue to allow you office space.
Starting with bride getting ready to the end of the evening do makes for a very long day indeed.
    But I love it

On the society type weddings I used to show proofs from film shot earlier... during the reception.
That got sales from the distant friends and relatives on the night, when they were still full of wine.

This chap from Latvia is incredible.. I love his weddings...
It is worth looking right through his site, his quality and ideas are top notch.
There is a staggering Orthodox wedding he took in Russia there some where.

Was that digital or film with a 'runner' to the lab Terry?
I have been through that site and I agree, Menine has some wonderful stuff on there.

That was long before digital ...I had a lab man take the films back after the phoney cake cutting and process and print. ( Black and white)
we later found a lab that would do it as colour 5x7 in an hour.

Yes, I'm confident I'd make a complete pig's ear of it. It's just not my style, I hate taking pictures of people.

But the point is moot, nobody would ask me, I don't have any friends who would be likely do do foolish things like getting married.

I always find that the inexperienced forget about the phoney cake cutting - and then get killed in the rush
I have used runners in the past Terry but the majority want digital these days and need to see you working for your money. I do still enjoy it though

Re: POLL - The unofficial wedding photographer

I guess I would do it if asked, I did my sisters wedding but there were only four of us! (she wanted a VERY low key marriage)
I love photographing people, but hate them posing - maybe some enterprising marriage 'accessory' supply company could devise a hide for wedding photographers - perhaps inside a huge tiered cake out of which one could burst at the end of the evening showering the happy couple with tasteful pre-coital pics of what they have just endured. I digress.

Re: POLL - The unofficial wedding photographer

I'm still trying to get my head around the 'unofficial' bit - I mean, what, precisely, is an 'unofficial wedding'? Is it where you dispense with church and clergy, and just get on with it, or is it like a Cypriot engagement, where the about-to-be-betrothed go at it for three months, and if she's not pregnant by then, then the whole things called off?

Either way, I don't have the necessary studio lighting, so forget it.
