    Gapher: How's it going Oggy?

Oggy: Er - not too good. The jig has been damaged and I will have to rework it to get the product in tollerance.

Gapher: OK. This job takes three hours. Assuming nothing goes wrong, it will be ready in three hours then

    Oggy:

I have to say that being a good manager is quite a hard act - I have tried it. I have met two good ones that stick in my mind. Mike functioned as a facilitator. He looked at what the boys were doing then worked out what they needed, and be it a new laptop, a night in the pub or a bit of a slap, we got it. In another job Dave was doing his daily progress check and he came into my bay and asked what I was doing. I explained that I was setting up one of the robots. He asked how another of the robots was and I explained that I had to set up the first before I could do the second one. Then he said that our biggest customer was visiting and my bay needed tidying. I must have given him one of those "stick the broom etc" looks and he stopped and thought for a moment probably something along the lines of "there are two people here, both can tidy up but only one can set the robots up" so he went and got a broom and swept up. Fair play to him.

I've never understood how senior managers never seem to be working for the same company as the rest of the workforce. They are usually very out of touch, and don't really stand up to much criticism.

A manager does need to be in some ways:
    1. Social worker.
    2. Psychiatrist.
    3. UN representative for peace.
    4. Ultra co-ordinator of all things.
    etc...

The worst managers are those who neglect you, and then critizise.

The best are those who enable you, and support you.

But it very much depends of the type of industry one works in, and the type of person it is managing you.

19 of the 20 managers in my office are women. Where is the glass ceiling there? There is 1 male manager.

My current boss is the product of the rectum-stretcher factory....

Gives employess no support, and only beging flapping when our quality people remark that the training is out of date...

he says: it's your responsibility to get your training done...

I say; everytime I want to go training it's refused...
