Probably blue-green algae (oscillatoria). Don't let your pets or kids swim in it, it's very toxic.
FRIPN. Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

If its just below the surface and looks like green cotton wool, then its a green algae. If its like little green lentils floating on the surface then its a duck weed. Neither are toxic but they can shade the water and when they die they can suck the oxygen out the water. But personally I'd rather believe that Evelyn Lindsay made too much of her nifty pea soup.....

It looks like it's on the surface. Pea soup - sounds about right.
Mmm... Butlin's circa 1978...

It's duckweed.
Hmmm? Nifty moving up on the inside of Evelyn Lindsay - there could be a very sexy encounter underway here.
Mike.
That's all very well but what does Ken Rockwell have to say on the matter?
It does look like duckweed... But need a closer look.
Got anything taken a bit closer?
Looks like the stuff covering my pond (see my first view pic for this month) - in which case it's duckweed.
I'm STILL waiting for someone to tell me how to get rid of it.

With a net, my pond is less than 2M across so it is do-able but I do not know how you would tackle it in the Regent's CanalLooks like the stuff covering my pond (see my first view pic for this month) - in which case it's duckweed.

I spend hours netting the damn stuff but miss just one tendril and it comes back within days. I'm seriously thinking of emptying the pond, ditching all the plants and starting again. With a net, my pond is less than 2M across so it is do-able but I do not know how you would tackle it in the Regent's CanalLooks like the stuff covering my pond (see my first view pic for this month) - in which case it's duckweed.
