    Pentland Sunrise (2 pics)

    A couple from yesterday morning....

I started off at the top of Carnethy Hill so the sun would rise behind Turnhouse Hill (one of my favourite hills so want some nice pics for my wall). The rock stack was just there but I quite liked it...thought it looked better than it not being there. Didn't like the street lights in the first so went down the hill a bit to hide them.

Have more angles and bits of the hill to try but thoughts on these welcome

Looks like it was well worth the early rise Andy - or had you been out all night?

    Cracking Shots.

Very nice indeed, Andy. Congrats for the early start and for two lovely shots.

That's all very well but what does Ken Rockwell have to say on the matter?

    Thanks chaps

Set off about 1am to get these figuring it would probably take me about 2 hours to walk there and the sky would start doing stuff from about 3:30am. The shots were taken at 3:50 and 4:05.

Spotted a couple of shots down in the valley to try for next time too

Left the bike at home as I was taking the tripod and it gets in the road. Will take the bike next time though....can get from home up and over those 2 hills and back in an hour an a half so it's a fair bit quicker on the bike....the hill I was taking a pic of is 40mph+ in places and bumpy as heck

....will just have to behave if I strap a heavy tripod to the outside to my normal biking rucksack. The lowe-pro mini-trekker is too unstable for on the bike if it's steep and bumpy.

Nice shots. Stones in the first one and the lighting in the foreground of the second one.

Unlike James, I don't like the rock in the second shot, for me all the interest is in the sky and the top third of the image, that I do like.
I agree with you regarding the street lights in the first one, nice heap of rocks perhaps you could do something placing them to the right of the composition with the hills in the left side of the BG.

    Re: Pentland Sunrise (2 pics)

    Cheers guys

I tried a few compositions at the top of the hill....but I don't think I tried one with the rocks on the right...will give it a go...ta

Although I'm hopeful of conditions like this which should hopefully block out the street lights. There was some mist blowing round the hills from the south but not enough.

....either that or set of a huge EMP to switch the lights off Might need a film camera for the shot then though
