The beautiful Cuckmere (pronounced 'Cookmere') Valley is probably one of the most photographed locations (along with adjacent Seaford Head) on the South Coast. But changes are afoot and I thought those landscapers among you who are familiar with the place might like to have your say either in the official online survey HERE, or at one of the meetings being held (details on the same website).
Cuckmere is famous for its stunning meanders, formerly of the adjacent River Cuckmere but isolated by a canal cut in the 19th century. Now the Environment Agency is going to stop maintaining the banks of the canal cut so that they will eventually collapse and the whole area will revert to a tidal estuary. Some think this is a good idea, some think it not so good.
I understand the Environment Agency's logic is to allow coastal 'breathing space' for high tides and flood waters as opposed to continuing the losing battle against the rising sea. In so doing, they believe they can take the 'sting' out of the worst flood dangers and thereby protect populated areas from inundation.
If you've never photographed a gorgeous sunset reflecting in the meanders, you'd better do it soon as it might not look the same for very much longer. What happens might be good too, but it will be different.
It would be nice to see any photos you might have. I've not managed to capture the definitive stunner yet!
Another nugget of info; I understand the Nazis planned to launch operation Sealion by establishing the initial bridgehead in the Cuckmere Valley.
