The story as it happened

Visitor laughing at being in charge - just the once!

Couple of hours post-op; button in left hand for morphine infusion

Autologous blood transfusion - what ran out through the wound drains was pushed back in - nice and safe that way

PCA - Patient controlled analgesia, nice and safe again, built in safeguards prevent OD

Night time vigil - the loneliest time for anyone as time just drags it's way towards morning.

BIg wedge to prevent rolling onto the operated side and risking dislocation of the new joint

Ouch! first look at the wound site 12"- 14" slash in my leg all held together with staples

And now it is exactly 7 days since the operation, have been home for 2 days, pain control is good and physio have been to set up an exercise regime. I have a 'fat leg' and have to inject myself with Clexane for the next 4 weeks but otherwise I am VERY impressed with the NHS.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh! Peter's butt! This post should carry a government health warning!

Seriously though, nice to see you on the road to recovery (if not to see your butt! )

Excellent news. Did you pick up my advice about retail therapy, and buying a big fat lens to match your big fat leg? Better move quick before the swelling goes down

Yet another photo to add to my homage to the men of this forum... shame Peter didn't have a hat on , but hey....

I do the same kind of thing - take photos of literally everything I can and document stuff... I find it amusing, but I imagine my friends get quite narked!

Hope your recovery is still going well

Re: The story as it happened

Recovery IS going well - so far. There is a shed load of clips/staples to come out next friday and I really don't enjoy injecting the Clexane into my belly, I have to have a 'nap' after lunch and the affected leg swells up pretty alarmingly but to be honest I feel better than I expected to.
Praise the Lord it is only a 'bit butt' If I turned round all the ladies on here would be after leaving their husbands - and I don't know if I could cope
    Thank you everyone

Bugger that..... I needed GCFS injections daily leading up to my stem cell transplant and then anti viral injections into the old tummy area. Oh you can do them yourself said the doctor... mmmm no thanks, you can send the district nurse in to do them. By the way, all the district nurses said they could never inject themselves either if asked.

    Did I read that correctly

Good to see you're on the road to recovery Peter, but how did you manage to find an empty ward.

It wasn't when he went in, he obviously drove the others away.

Re: The story as it happened

Apparently the ward is 'ring fenced' for 'cold' orthopaedic surgery. Staff are static and cannot be moved. Surgeons have strict admission rotas and on that day 2 of them were on holiday - therefore no admissions. My guy had a ward full next door in the ladies bay but only me on the male side - it was as boring as all hell for 24 hours and then filled up. I couldn't show pics of those guys.

It's not a big needle but it does sting sometimes. Sandra - Mrs Parisian is diabetic and has to self inject 4 times a day - I couldn't for shame wimp out could I?
