Any of the 'new' generation of iMacs will fill the bill a lot more than adequately. Stick a good Epson Printer on the desk alongside it and enjoy. All your needs are contained within this very sexy package. Back up drive can be added if necessary still within budget.

I agree that a 24" monitor is a really good buy, possibly along with a secondary smaller (19"?) display if the computer will run two monitors.

A BIG hard drive, and at least one spare one for back up are essential.

Never mind the discussion about windows and 32 / 64 bit processing, just go with Parisian's suggestion and get a MAC.

With software, get the computer, hold a few hundred in reserve and try both lightroom and aperture and see which you like best (two monitors, especially if one is 24", gives you plenty of space to use the various layout options on offer)

    Good girl
I looked at both Lightroom and Aperture Carrie and plumped for Aperture. The RAW conversion is awesome and set out in a very, very good workflow sequence.
