Anyone else had a speed increase recently?

Just noticed my broadband speed has gone up to 6.5mbps from it's former lowly just under 1mbps....................which is nice ....................though Orange are making me pay for the privilege by increasing my monthly fee ..................still, I don't really mind cause it's nice to be fast for a change! Anyone else had their broadband speed increased recently? I think this is part of the governments plan to upgrade broadband service to the populace in general and ISP's (along with BT who are upgrading the exchanges) are rolling out the new higher speeds nationally.

A mate of mine who is with Virgin ADSL broadband recently experienced problems when they upgraded him for 2mbps to 8mbps as his modem/extension line seemed to have problems coping with the newer high speed. Anyone else experienced similar problems? I'm happy to report no such problems with my speed upgrade.

Nope, but then I live about 50 yards form the exchange so I don't lose any speed there.

I haven't measured my speed recently, but on the work line I was hitting 7-8 MB IIRC, more than enough for me.

I'm with Virgin I've just tested my speed and I'm now hitting the lofty heights of 6mb though I'm supposed to be getting up to 10mb. Things don't seem to be any faster, maybe my modem ain't up to the job. Though this morning I sent a photo to a friend of mine 3.4mbs and it went very quick. Just checked and I'm gone down to four may not be the flavour of the month again. Wait till I get up to ten which will probably be four in the morning, so not much good to anyone

Virgin have just automatically upgraded my previously adequate 2m to 10 and reduced the price, by a couple of pence. Can't say I notice much difference but as I very rarely download anything I probably won't.

6.5 millibits per second ... I'd have run out of patience long ago; good job there's no connection time charge!

The delivery speed actually makes very little difference once over about 1Mbps - factors like loading on routers, the capability of the remote servers and the inevitable round trip time delay which limits the amount of data "in flight" overwhelm the actual delivery speed - you don't get more traffic on a motorway by increasing the speed limit when the traffic lights on the slip road are limiting the volume.

Zen (my ISP) are updating all their customers to the 'up to 20mb' connection over the summer, so I guess I'll be having a speed boost. Though as my router isn't ADSL2+ I guess I might not get as much as a boost as I'd like.

Good thing is, upload speeds will be increase from around 440k to 1mb.
