    Advice re ADSL line speed

Sorry if this is long winded.

I have an ongoing issue with my ISP where I lose connection for no apparent reason. My PC's would all show correct wireless connections and hard wiring makes no difference. My router (new from the ISP with new filter) status would state ADSL line not connected.

Today, a BT engineer has checked the wiring from my house to the exchange and replaced the ISP equipment in the exchange.

Using his laptop and router he gets a download speed of 7.1 Meg at the exchange and 2.1 Meg in my house. When I connect I get 0.5meg.

Any ideas as to why I should get such a slow download speed?

Is your router/adsl modem connected to your main phone socket via an extension lead? That could cause a problem. Also, where are you getting your speed reading from? I'd suggest you go here for an accurate speed check of your broadband speed on a bt line.

Also, don't forget contention ratio. If you're on ADSL you'll be sharing the pipe to the exchange with up to 50 other users. If you test when all the school kids have just got home then you'll see a dip in performance.

Thanks for the replies. Still no further forward. Second BT engineer has tested the line and found it faster than the first.

Still waiting for call back from ISP,
