    Re: Pronunciation

It won't matter how Nikon should have been pronounced if Nikon don't give us anything more interesting to discuss than how to pronouce their name.
Beg to differ. Any company that brought us cameras such as the F series, the SP rangefinder, and the D3 will be talked about long after they disappear having been bought out/bankrupted by a Chinese upstart video manufacturer.
Oh how I agree with you! And thank you very much for your explanation of Nikon in Japanese.

U S E L E S S is how you pronounce that Bettina. The written and spoken translations from the Japanese lose quite a lot.

Only in the hands of a Nikon user. In the hands of a photographer, it's an invaluable tool - which is a bit like the Nikon user, only invaluable...

By gum, that's fighting talk where I come from. Thank heavens I'm not where I come from. Anyway I'm both a Nikon and a Kwanon (that is indeed what they were first called) user, and love 'em both. So there.

Not sure Aluminum is a good example.
Yeah, I know about Davy, but lets face it, aluminum just sounds stupid.
    Which reminds me:
    Sir Humphrey Davy detested gravy;
He lived in the odium of having discovered sodium

    1) What do some UK-ers pronounce a name or thing that has an "A" or A sound at the end as if it were an "er" sound?
    IE.....the Obamer Administration.

    2) Even though you spell it "colour"....we don't pronounce
it as ca-lour(as in "our language is strange")...we say it the same as you.

Now we are even.....or does that mean we are one up on you?

    Errrrr...que?
spelt "irque" (or maybe "Torquay" but with a silent tea)
Too many cameras, too many lenses.......

I don't mind Ny-Kon by Americans, sounds OK just sounds a little silly when Brits do it.

    Aluminum, nuff said.

The one that actually irritates me is the American pronunciation of thorough...THURROW!

    Re: Pronunciation

I would have thought considering japanese manufacturers like naming their brands so they sound similar to a reputable name at the time, the idea of it being pronounced 'Eye-Kon' as in Zeiss-Ikon, sounds par for the course. However, Nicks' assertion that it's pronounced 'Doortop' and Nikon were only following in Zeiss's footsteps, when you consider the weight of Zeiss's Contarex's, which certainly deserve weight-wise to be suitable for that purpose!

Look here you, I'm a whole week post-op now and can nearly stand up so watch it!
Actually, I don't know why we have these Canon / Nikon bust-ups. In their way they are so far in front of the other makes that is almost laughable - always (since the 60's anyway) have been really. Between them there is no conceivable subject that could not be approached by their systems.
All the other makes may as well go home and start making calculators

It must be Nick; as sure as Will has a Daff. up his jacksie there is nowt wrong with the machinery on either side - with nothing to moan about we have to resort to humour.

    Re: Pronunciation

Yep nowt wrong with either Nikon or Canon kit (or a lot of the others as well, they just don't have the full range of offerings).

I speak from being a long time Canon user (20 years) from AE-1, A1, EOS1000FN,EOS 5, EOS 350D, the A1 and EOS 5 being my favourites. When I had the opportunity to have a major upgrade (thanks to being relocated at work, and hence being compensated) I was all set to get another Canon (5D) the MK2 was not out then.

But I decided to have a look at what was out there, and after looking at and handleing different models, I decided that the Nikon D300 suited me best and as my investment in Canon AF lenses was small, most of it was in FD lenses, the change was not going to be all that painfull on the pocket (ah em), then while waiting for the money to arrive, along came the D700, and the rest is they say history.

The D700 has proved to be excellent, as no doubt the 5DMk2 would have been had it been on the radar at the time. Still with the investment in Nikon kit now being of the order of £5500, I'm now sticking to Nikon for quite a while.

For that kind of money you can get a lot more than a camera, like a couple of holidays somewhere worth the effort of photographing.

    Re: Pronunciation

Anywhere is worth the effort of photographing properly. For what it's worth, I just realised today that I have never bought an accessory (and that includes lenses!) for over £40. Even my most expensive camera was just £300.

Doesn't stop me from dreaming though.
