This Years Holiday

Decided I need a holiday. So I'm up for suggestions as to where to go (keep it clean please!!!).

Ideally, somewhere with good photographic locations, pub (essential) and, if possible, live music. Must be in UK (no passport) and not too great a travelling distance (having just changed my car, finances are a bit limited).

Preferably not Devon or Cornwall.

Already been to the Isles of Scilly and Lake District.

How about Dorset? Just on your doorstep, loads to see and do, plenty of excellent pubs some of which must have music. Or the Sussex Downs. Or the Black Mountains/Brecon Beacons.

BTW the A75 - which used to be a real bind - is now mostly a pleasant experience to drive on, it bypasses just about everywhere en route.

Remember that if you travel in the EU you don't need a passport - they help, but any ID is acceptable.

Having said that, Cornwall is gorgeous, as is much of Scotland.

You'll be hard pressed to find an airline or ferry company that will let you board an international flight or steerage without a passport. Certainly, I wouldn't want to risk it.

Oh it is, and I wouldn't want to put anyone off either that part of the world or the other end of the ferry.

Nope. The ferry company will ask for photo ID but a driving licence, bus pass, voting registration card etc. will do just fine.

Edit: You should check that your car insurance covers the Republic of Ireland - even if you have comprehensive cover it may be "legal minimum only" when "South of the Border". But otherwise crossing the border is pretty much a non event - sometimes you don't even know you've done so, apart from the colour of the post boxes & the style of the road signs. Oh, and the price of petrol/diesel. Fill the tank before crossing back to the UK & save nearly the price of the ferry crossing.

A passport is handy to take for ID at hotels etc. though.
