Camera and travelling

Hi,

I'm going to Thailand in a few weeks and having recently bought a lovely new SLR am very keen to take it. However, I am more than slightly worried about the security side of things, particularly as we are travelling on a budget (hostels etc) and I wondered if you guys had any general tips as to how to keep the camera as safe as possible?

What are the general thoughts about travelling to these sorts of places with nice camera equipment? Should I just leave it and take my compact?
