    File size and image quality

    Hi

First time poster here and complete newcomer to photography.

I have a picture which I was considering entering in this month's competitions. However, I have resized the image to 600 pixels wide and the quality is very low, despite being taken on a 10Mp camera.

I think the issue is caused because the picture is (deliberately) long and thin, so at 600 pixels wide the contents are too small to see and the picture needs enlarging. However, I think a cropped version loses the impact.

Any technological or stylistic advice appreciated!

    Thanks

    Lewis

The first pic looks like only 500 pixels long not 600 - that would make some difference.

You could also have saved it in higher quality. The site allows a file size of up to 100k and yours is only about 35k. That might improve the clarity of the image?

Thanks for all your replies. I'll have a look at saving in higher quality and hopefully it'll make some difference, else I'll just enter as it is and link to my Flickr page. I think I have linked to an even lower quality Flickr version so as suggested maybe a 600 pixel wide shot will look ok.

The shot was taken in Dubai, from the top of the Jumeirah Palm (one of three artificial island developments in the shape of palm trees). The houses in the foreground are situated on one of the branches of the palm, while the cityscape behind is one of numerous waterfront developments on the mainland.

I'm afraid the competition rules (#5) disallow that in an attempt to level out the playing field, and simplify the judging process.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'm not going to win with my first ever entry, but I don't want to be disqualified!

While I'm not 100% sure, I think a first entry has won in the past.

But the reality is generally, in that situation, the link would be removed, not the entry itself.
