Pentax K7 First Look

Hi

I thought you might like to know that my First Look at the Pentax K7 will be in our 20th June issue. It's a very interesting camera with some very useful novel features.

Come Saturday morning, I will be sitting with bated breath in front of the letterbox awaiting the postie!

I'm really interested in the HDR (I believe it merges multiple exposures in camera) and the "Composition Adjustment" - is it useable as a shifting back?

Hi Angela,

Have you ever thought about inviting an AP reader who, happening to own an earlier incarnation of the camera, would be interested in trying the new model and giving their insightful and apposite comments about the changes/improvements?

p.s. I own a Samsung GX-10.

Well I have the K10 so that should put me at the head of the que. Or at least until someone with a K20 comes along

I have seen another user on a Pentax Forum has been lent a K7 for two weeks for him to use and comment upon. Some of the images from the camera look very nice and it sounds like he's really enjoying it...

p.p.s. Did I say I previously owned a K10D and now own a K20D...

Me! Me!

I have a K100D and so far haven't felt that the improvements in subsequent models merited their increase in bulk. So I humbly submit myself as the ideal person to road test this for AP.

(Angela, just PM me, so the others don't get jealous!)

I have an *ist film have owned ist DL, K100D, have K10D and GX20 so I think I'm perfect for the test...and of course I might give the camera back at the end....

Rubbish! You'll be buying the K-7 anyway given your form. I'm a better candidate!

I still use a Spotmatic, so if you can tell me what film goes in the K-7D, I'm your man...

Hi Angela,

I will be flogging the K7, albeit across the pond, so I will let the other fight over
first dibs on "playing with the camera" but I am curious as to what you
DID NOT LIKE ABOUT THE CAMERA?

Cheers,

I don't see that as the warmest welcome a new machine has had - rather like a school report that talks about the child's social skills and willingness to help while giving a wide berth to any comments at all on academic achievement.
I suspect that the hype will be greater than the reality.
I also suspect that Jack spotted the same 'careful' language.

Re: Pentax K7 First Look

Well, the postie's been, and I've had a quick skim through of Angela's First Look, and I think I'd describe the tone as "cautiously enthusiastic". Of course she has to give warnings that the camera she tested didn't have final firmware, but apart from that, it read to me as a pretty warm welcome, especially for some of the new features, such as the auto levelling.

Thanks, Angela!

Haven't read it and don't feel I need to. I can make my own mind up based upon personal experience.

Having played with it myself for some considerable time at SRS last week I am completely sold compared to the 'equivalent' Nikon or Canon which I have also played with.

I must say the one big advantage of using a Canon or Nikon over Pentax is that these market leaders are excellent at building muscle and bulk. So with any money I save with the K7 I would have to invest the difference in a gym membership to build the equivalent muscle density I would get from carry one of those around - so it all evens out eventually

Re: Pentax K7 First Look

I was a little cautious regarding the HDR in camera, which only works with JPEG files. Is it not possible to do this with RAW, or is the processing of three large files that is too much? To my mind, this is a gimmick as it can be done better elsewhere post production. Just as in camera monochrome can be.

I like the rear screen density and the better live view. Also the 'Olympus Style' dust protection should be really superb, my E-500 was brilliant.

I am also intrigued to know why this is a 'mid range' camera? Is there something even better in 'Semi Pro' style coming along?

my second (2nd) order of K7's
