... a Haven spokeswoman today admitted that the ban was to guard against the risk of any paedophiles among its guests.

Plus, if she continues the, a'hem, logic she employed in citing that nursery incident it's the Haven staff who should be treated with utter suspicion and contempt, not the punters.

Nah, these numpties need to get a grip.

With all of these paranoid fascist PC anti photography measures I wonder if instances of paedophilia are lower in the UK than in freer societies which allow photography?

Because, as we are all aware, everyone with a camera is a paedophile and there's a paedophile on every street corner, in every school and park ready to photograph all the little kids every minute of the day.

I say boycott anywhere that doesn't allow photography. Hit them where it hurts...in the wallet.

What total unreasonableness.

I have 2 daughters and a son and love having pictures and videos of their childhoods. Are we killing off this for future generations. All it will do is create a less caring society.

Also, what STUPIDITY. Say there are paedophiles about. The police might want information and evidence. Such as photos and videos. So the result is making life EASIER FOR PAEDOPHILES!! Doh...

Re: Indecent image fears triggered pool photo ban

When its the school play and they ban cameras that makes me angry. With this one I'm not sure, where as in a play kids are going to be in everyday clothing. In a swimming pool it has to be a better option for the paedos. Yes it's a sad state of affairs but in this case I have to say I agree. We had the fiasco of the Greek photog last week. That was a ridiculous situation, but if you were a parent in a swimming pool and someone with a camera was pointing it in your childs direction. Fair enough if your level headed and can see things for what they are. If your like the guy that accused the Greek photog of taking pics of his child. Well do the sums yourselves. Though I hate the way things are going, on this one I don't see a problem.

That's not correct!!!!!

some facts and figures:

33 1/3% photographers are paedophiles
33 1/3% photographers are terrorists
33 1/3% photographers are both terrorists and paedophiles

and all the rest of the population are paranoid PC hypocrites.

...Though I hate the way things are going, on this one I don't see a problem.
I do see a problem and it appears to be one of excessive paranoia, albeit, perhaps, with good intentions. We should focus on evidence-based discussion on this issue. In the well publicised cases of paedophiles who have been caught with obscene images on their computers, they have been variously described as "vile" and "of the most sickening nature" and "involving acts of cruelty and child sexual abuse" or similar descriptions. The evidence suggests that paedophiles do not have on their computers pictures of kids in bathing costumes playing in the pool or appearing in the school play or sports day.

So, despite the laudable desire to protect children, many organisations and schools are simply kidding themselves and the public that they are somehow creating a safer environment for children by labelling photographers as pariahs. If people keep an old fashioned 'eye' on kids in their care, it is unlikely anything bad will happen to them. Yet it never ceases to amaze me how often I see apparently unsupervised children whose parents or carers are at least too far away to prevent real harm such as abduction. Although rare, it can happen in seconds. We need to apply common sense to the paedophile threat, not paranoia.

Re: Indecent image fears triggered pool photo ban

......but if you were a parent in a swimming pool and someone with a camera was pointing it in your childs direction.
and even if they did photograph your child, so what?
what can happen......worst case scenario: child is photographed and photo doctored and photoshopped into a paedophilic pornographic image. The said image of an anonymous child/ren is then passed around amongst a small, very secretive group of sickos who have no idea who the child is. If anyone who knows your child and sees the image then they should be arrested for paedophilia but the chances of that happening are a trillion to one. Chances are you don't know that your child has been photographed and that a sick image even exists.

The trauma a child would go through witnessing his/her parents hysterical behaviour at someone shooting pictures would cause much more serious damage then any hidden secret photograph.

There are lot more serious worries for parents about the care and well-being of their children then the absurdity of fearing their being photographed.

Re: Indecent image fears triggered pool photo ban

The ban must surely be based on genuine information that paedophiles are operating in their camps. They are just using the photography ban as a cover up. I wonder what else they are doing to limit paedophile activity?
If the truth of paedophile infestation got into the press they would probably be shut down and the red-coats subjected to spontaneous lynchings....

Have to say anyone who believes your average nonce gets his/her jollies from pics of kids in pools is doing nothing but adding to the paranoiac malaise besetting this country, and others...

If you are a paedophile with a fast 300mm lens there is no need to put yourself at risk of arrest - just sit 100yds away!

What nonsense all this is - makes my blood boil - children have less and less freedom to be themselves because of over anxious & obsessive parents.

The most risk they face? Being driven to school by a distracted parent!

Yep, I have to agree with that. I lived and worked in Germany for a number of years and had no such difficulties. Nor have we ever come across anything like this anywhere in Continental Europe, or Canada.

The kids are all wearing clothes, so what if some perve does get a pic. Anyway better he get caught taking the photo close up rather than half a mile from a beach through a 500mm lens!
