    Icon display

This is such a silly issue and I feel I ought to be able to sort it for myself, but I have failed miserably after much trying and after consulting the in-built "help" function at length.

I have a desktop machine and a laptop, set up, as far as possible, to give identical displays.

Both are running Vista Home Premium. The 64bit version on the desktop and the 32bit version on the laptop.

On the desktop machine, the on-screen Icons are displayed with white text below them, that text being in a black drop-shadow. The text displays clearly, pretty much irrespective of the background.

On the laptop, the Icons have the same white text, but without the drop shadow. Against pale backgrounds, the text is very difficult to see.

Can anyone please tell me how to create the black drop shadow around the Icon text?

Yeah, if you find it... let me know. I've been looking for years on how to change that in different versions of windows.

AFAIK It just can't be done.

Isn't it always the way? As soon as I put up the help message I found the answer for myself.

Control Panel - Performance Information and Tools - Adjust visual effects - Custom - Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop.

What about changing the colour of the text?

Before any XP users try that, I couldn't find "Performance Information and Tools" under Control Panel, so there must be another way of doing it in XP.

    I'll let you do that, I'm quitting while I'm ahead . . . .

It's nearly lunch-time. I hear the sound of dishes in the dining room and it draws me inexorably to more interesting things.

    control panel
    system
    advanced tab
    performance [settings]
it's in the custom button options near to the bottom.

[googled it or I'd not know either ]

Thank you, I always thought it was rather sad to scroll all the way down, nice to find something useful hidden down there. Not that I have ever noticed the shadows. Can't see them now for that matter.
