    Jessops film prices!

I only ever bought B&W film from Jessops, because unlike the colour film the prices were quite reasonable (about £3 with the 10% off I still blagged) and even though I bought most of my film online they were handy for when I occasionally ran out of the film I wanted, anyway one of those occasions crept up the other day I pooped in to get a roll and it was £5 a time, and Delta £6!

I decided not to bother, panicking I went onto 7Dayshop to see if something had happened to make their prices go shooting up as well, and thankfully that's still about the same, not the £2.20 of a couple of years ago but £2.80 I can live with.

I'm not sure why the ridiculous price hike, maybe they think it will force people into buying a digital camera, (I already have 3 of those anyway) or maybe they want the sales to drop enough to have an excuse to stop selling it. I still think the ridiculous prices people thought that they needed to pay for rolls of film, like £5 for a 24exp roll of Kodak crap helped seal films fate.

I guess they noticed what everyone else on the high street was charging and thought they could get a bit more dosh!

The price for Ilford Delta if you buy direct from is £5.55 so Jessops have no excuse. Judging by the financial reports the big J won't have long to go now anyway.

Another thing is they don't have the pro films in a fridge anymore, I'm not sure if the fridge is gone, because it used to be kept with sheet film.

It probably broke, and there's nothing in the petty cash tin to replace it with!

I went Jessops today and they only had 1 roll of K64 in a battered box and was charging over £13 for it.

    Re: Jessops film prices!

Sadly at the end of the day if people don't buy much, the company doesn't buy much and the purchasing power goes down. I'm pleased to say that Reading still sells a lot of film, we still have our fridge and have a good selection of films, Kodak in a couple of different speeds, both the vivid and the natural colour (in 35mm and 120), Fuji pro print stuff, slide films (including Velvia, Provia and Sensia). We even have a couple of boxes of 5x4 not that we sell that very often... As well as all the usual suspects from Ilford pretty much all of which we have in 120 as well as 35mm.

I do share your pain because I still use film myself, but it just continues to get more and more specialist. One thing I don't understand though is this comment:

The price for Ilford Delta if you buy direct from is £5.55 so Jessops have no excuse
I don't see why it's unusual that a company charges more than the manufacturer? Surely this is the same in a whole lot of places?

Anyway, this isn't a rant (there's a smiley to prove it ) it's just that there isn't nearly as much call for film as there used to be, even 2 years ago and the market was quite different.

I'm glad that Reading is so well stocked-sadly in other branches it is simply not the case. I wonder if it is a self-perpetuating situation-because the branches have little stock people stop going to buy so sales drop leading to less stock on the shelf.......

Unfortunately Jacobs don't seem to be much better. A roll of Ilford Delta 400 black and white was about £5.00.

I've been buying film in shops recently but it's getting to be a bit hard to part with a tenner for a roll of Velvia 50 and only get a penny change. I see it's £3.95 per roll on 7dayshop.com and now that my jaw has returned from the floor I may ordered a roll, or ten!

I was surprised today when I needed new batteries for my camera that Jessops were the cheapest place around. WHSmiths £3.99, Jessops £1.47.

I wend into Jessops and they were selling K64 for £6.50 because its coming up to its date, I bought 6 rolls that's going it the freezer as my pension.

Sadly at the end of the day if people don't buy much, the company doesn't buy much and the purchasing power goes down.
So the price goes from £3.30 to £5.50 (HP5+) I don't think that can be the only reason, I think the last time I bought a roll of film from Jessops was maybe less than a year ago.

Sadly I think Jessops days are numbered.

I had to get some film there and it just looked depressed.

It's all on the internet now. People go to Jessops, waste their time, fiddle with the stock, then buy online.

Personallly I'd swear Jessops were trying to build some kind of designer boutique chain rather than photo shops. Sterile atmosphere, pretty things in secure glass displays,a few hooks with so called accessories hanging from them and a row of monitors down one side - Cyber cafe anyone lol

When I think how Jessops was just a very short few years ago with customers three deep at the desk and more equipment than you could shake a stick at..... ARE YOU LISTENING JESSOPS - YOU HAVE LOST YOUR WAY BIG TIME

What goes around comes around. Back in the 1950's Jessops sold film in bulk by mail order and at prices that undercut the local photographers. Our fridge always had a shelf stocked with Kodachrome 25 bought by mail from Jessops of Leicester and I suspect that in those days, a lot of their business was by mail order at prices lower than the local shop could offer.

At the Slough branch they kept a roll of Kodak HIE on display for £9.00, through the boiling heat of the dog days of several summers. They put it in one of their "bargain bins" recently, still at £9.00, and now it's there for £2.50 if anyone wants to take it!

When I explained to them that it would have been useless if not kept in a freezer, they replied that they were just told what to sell and what price to put on it.
