It all looks rather complicated written down
... and is thoroughly confusing to at least one user. What the **** is wrong with having one dedicated control for each major function? Small film SLRs managed well enough with dedicated controls for shutter speed, aperture & ISO ...

I consider flash exposure compensation to be a major function too. 4 dials is probably a bit much. Personally I find the 2 dials and a 'shift' button on my 40D to be a good compromise. One dial and lots of shift buttons was a pain on my 300D.

...then again I can go weeks without changing ISO or shutter speed....maybe it would be nice to have the front dial doing FEC and leave the back one doing the aperture....hmmm

FEC off, it works fine as it is.

I thought that having an ISO control button was the be all and end all for you?

It is sometimes. Occasionally a beastie moves from where I can light the background with flash to where I can't and that's when it can be the difference between a black background and a colourful background in the shot.

Not that that beastie was going anywhere fast

I prefer the DoF and detail in the low ISO shot with the black background but I find the brighter background more pleasing on the eye in the ISO 800 shot.

Actually, I prefer the second shot all round.

At that resolution I'd agree. Depends how closely you want to look at the shot though....if it was an interesting subject you wanted to have a close look at you may not care what the background is. I have more fun trying to get nice backgrounds and being able to adjust the ISO easily can help me do that.
