    picture styles

hello, i've just got a few quick questions re picture styles...

i take it they're only applied to the jpeg files and not the raw data?

do people use them? as surely all the adjustments can be made in photoshop or similar once you've uploaded whichever file format you shoot in, onto your computer?

if you do use them, do you have a favourite setting, or are you constantly changing the setting to match the situation?

what custom settings do you use, if any?

thanks for looking. as you may be able to tell, i'm still getting used to my new camera

Yes - you can do what you want with raw files, but the style will be applied to the initial "look".

I don't bother with them, but I imagine that they might be useful to someone doing commercial work which requires a quick turn-round and printing straight from jpegs -and who wants a "style" to distinguish his/her work from the competition.

They can be applied retrospectively using the Canon DPP raw software converter. In fact, IIRC, the camera setting is passed to the converter and it will use that mode of conversion unless you change it. Presumably this does not impact upon raw conversion using other software - but I don't know that for sure.

I found out about this after buying a secondhand camera, whose previous owner had it set on Landscape.

I leave the camera set on standard, but occasionally change it to Landscape during conversion if I want to give some more buzz to a scene. Using DPP you can immediately see the effect.

I must admit I only ever shoot raw as it gives me so much more flexibility in PP. I use adobe lightroom and photoshop CS3 for that. Setting a picture style has no effect on the picture in lightroom so I never bother with it.

    thanks for your help

i'm still to really try shooting in raw properly

i've done it now and again, but my playing with the image afterwards is a bit hit and miss, so i make or break images in equal number
