    Strange experience..

Got home about 10:30 last night having had to pop out to get the boss from a meeting. Opened the MacBook and "None of your preferred networks are available". Strange, it was working just before 10:00. Try the Philips (Windows XP), shows connected but with no signal strength. So I try to open a web page and the Philips duly does so, all be it very slowly.

So I reset the BT Home Hub and try again, neither computer will connect. After about 20 minutes I eventually get both connected but the signal strenght is minimal. This morning, nothing.

Stop of on the way home for a new access point ADSL Modem Wireless router, and some food. Get home, open the MacBook and full strength signal.

Grrrrrr don't you just hate computers?

So the BT adverts lie about the quality of the Home Hub?

The home hub seems to be fine when it works! I did get to wondering whether it was downloading firmware or some such. As I said it could be made to work but a much reduced signal strength.

I'm not even with BT I'm with Orange and I have my own Netgear hub which makes it all the stranger. Orange did say they were going to upgrade my service to "8 meg and unlimited downloads" so maybe that's got something to do with it? Maybe it was the weather, who knows? That 8 meg thing is a joke though cause the best I can ever get out here in the sticks with BT's crappy phoneline is 1 meg and as for the "unlimited downloads" bit...........no one from Orange has ever explained in layman's terms to me what this "fair usage" policy of theirs is!

It could be something to do with ADSL2 or ADSL2+ which is been rolled out across exchanges and ISPs. Demon mailed (by snail mail)account holders advising that some older equipment may have problems with the new service and that new firm ware may be required.
I had been having problems with my connection for a week or so and had just bought a nice new ADSL2+ which had cured the problems. Demon's letter arrived the day after I had set up the new router and explained why I was getting a faster down connection than before and a up connection faster than was theoretically possible on my ADSL contract.
The down speed is still not blistering, just checking the logs now and it's running at 6.7 Mbps and 1.02 Mbps upstream. I would guess as it does not get any higher than that it is the limit of my copper wire and distance to exchange.

Now look here, we spent a lot of money on Hammy's dentistry over the past year. He's got lovely white teeth now and tends to nibble on sunflower seeds rather than wires. He is also partial to Strawberry Chocolate Drops though.
