    Durham Cathedral Photographic Evening

    From Anne Heywood, Chapter Steward

"Usually there are restrictions on photography in Durham Cathedral. But we appreciate that there are those who would welcome the opportunity to spend a summer's evening testing their skill in capturing the essence of this wonderful building.

Therefore, we are holding a photographic evening from 6.30 to 9.00pm on Wednesday 17 June. The Cathedral will be open only for photography and members of the Durham Photographic Society will be on hand to help and advise. This sacred space is not that easy to capture in images, even with the increasingly sophisticated digital cameras but those with
simple 'point and snap' cameras are also more than welcome.

There will be a charge of £5.00 per camera. Tickets will be available in advance from the Information Desk in the Cathedral or at the door on the night.

Flash photography is not permitted but tripods are welcome as long as no-one trips over them!

This is the first time we have welcomed hobby photographers as a group to the Cathedral. Let's hope for a glorious summer evening when the Cathedral not only looks its best but should be bathed in light seldom seen by the public.

    Anne Heywood
    Chapter Steward"

Thanks for that, will attempt to get along, well worth a fiver. Hopefully there will be a decent turn out and they'll make a few bob.

They used to allow photography in there, (I have a few old B&W negatives) but I guess it gets so busy these days that it is just not practical.

If Durham Cathedral can do this, why not the National Trust?

The 'old slow to change' C of E is far more progressive and responsive to their public than the National Trust.
The National trust is run by an extremely arrogant clique that has the greatest possible contempt for their own members and members of the public who support them. This not only applies to photographers. The NT, like the Duchy of Cornwall, is one of the last refuges of a dying class.
