XP home - removing a partition

I bought a used PC; it has an 80GB hard drive partitioned roughly into 2 halves of 30-something GB each. How can I combine them back into one 80GB drive? So far my first attempt corrupted the whole lot and I have had to re-install XP home from scratch; quite time-consuming! This was using Paragon Partition manager, since the "help" instructions that came with XP did not seem to do anything. All help appreciated

On the installation you should have the option to delete the old partitions. When they are all deleted select the whole volume to install XP

Yep, I'd definitely go Stephen's way. By far the simplest. If you want to create a partition on it afterwards then you can do it using your partitioning software.

That has worked for me in the past, I would have thought that a clean install of XP would be very desirable in a used PC. In fact, why not get a new hard disk, if t isn't too difficult to install, then you will be sure of having a virus free, and partition free, computer.

I got an option to delete the partition on the clean install... but not to merge the 2 parts..... I now appear to have one partition of about 35GB, and the rest of the space is "unallocated" :-(

Get the existing partition to grow. You can't do this from the current installation of Windows but if you boot Windows or linux from a live CD you should be able to do this.

    Control Panel
    Performance and Maintenance
    Administrative Tools
    Computer Management
    Storage
    Disk Management

Here you can allocate the stupid, useless partition.
Can you tell I HATE partitions?
Does the picture turn out differently than what you see in the viewfinder?

You can't merge partitions during install. You have to delete them all and then create a new one that is the size of the disk.

Why delete it??? Keep it for file/image storage, that way you wont loose valuable documents and pictures if you need to re-install a busted or virused OS
