After much deliberation I have treated myself to a Canon 500d, does anyone know where I can download a user manual as it only came with a tradtional booklet

You can download it from this page.
Isn't there one on the CD (PDF)?

No, it has three discs, none of which were a user manual, but thanks for the link, I found the user manual that duplicates the paper booklet they did supply.
I actually bought two, one for me and one for my girlfriend, hers didn’t have one either, does seem odd that they did not come supplied with both a booklet and CD user manual. Both of us are want them for Cycle tours for bothscenic views as well as general shots, although I took those tours linked to using a Pentax Optio WP Waterproof camera (click for my review on a cycling website here) I did miss using my old Slr, plus to be honest the after having the Pentax repaired it has never been the same.
I have only had the camera a couple of days and have not had the time to get to grips with it yet, we hope to get on some local photography courses so that we can get the best from them.

That PDF has 228 pages. I wouldn't have called it a booklet. What were you expecting to get with the camera, a workshop repair manual? No, it has three discs, none of which were a user manual, but thanks for the link, I found the user manual that duplicates the paper booklet they did supply.

I called the user manual they supplied a 'booklet' because that is what Canon called it and yes I would have expected a disc that replicated the same; no I wouldn’t have expected a repair manual! That PDF has 228 pages. Must say I'm a bit confused on that issue, too.
I thought you were asking for something more than the printed version supplied. I have a series 1 body and the "booklet" is not much bigger than the version that came with your camera. Lighten up, I was having a joke (hence the smilies).
