8 contacts on the camera body, 5 on the lens...

    ....is it compatible?
I have an A300 dslr and am looking at one or two lenses.
Some of the "Sony compatible" Sigma's I see on ebay have only 5 contacts on their bases....will they work OK on the 8 contact A300 body?
As a new wolla to all this it's just one of a whole myriad of confusing matters!

Yes they will work. The extra pins are for Minolta's ADI (Advanced Distance Integration) flash metering and of small consequence in reality. They also were used in Minolta's xi series which had power zoom. The only caveat is that some old (pre 1989) Sigma lenses may not work properly with modern bodies.
