I had one years ago for my Zorki, and it's OK if you stop down. I now have one in Kiev mount, and it's terrific on that.

Variation between samples or simply that they were sourced from a better place?

Focus accuracy of the camera - it's a bit hit and miss with a 135 on a Zorki, but if you've enough DOF you can generally cover the error. The longer base of the Kiev makes it more accurate with this focal length.

So what you are really saying is, "You should have got a Kiev 4"?

No, not really. I prefer the Zorki in use to the Kiev - goes back to the pre-war Leica v Contax thing - the Contax was tehnically superior in most ways, but a fair bit clunkier IMHO.

Well I do actually like my FED 2 - not so keen on the 4, though.

Re: Waitin' on a Zorki 4K to arrive...

    I gotcha...I gotcha...

I had a funny episode with my Zorki and I thought it was dead. I got to the last shot of a film, the advance/shutter cocking lever could not go all the way. I didn't force it or anything as I am very careful as this camera is of Russian engineering like my Kiev 6C, so I let the lever return to its position and proceeded to rewind the film and take it out. For some strange reason, I found the film was broken so I couldn't wind it back (even though I thought I did) and so I proceeded very disappointedly to remove the film that had some great shots in it and then the camera regardless of what I did would either not fire the shutter or fire it at the same speed for all speeds.
Strangely enough and with myself not wanting to give up on the camera, I got home, played with it for a while and it seemed to have come back to normal. I put a film through took 5 shots and it seems or sounds as if the shutter speeds are currect and the camera, working.
    Regards,

Sounds like you need to sacrifice a roll of film and wind it through and back a few times to make sure everything is working as it's supposed to. Bear in mind that with the Zorki's 'state of the ark' engineering there's no need to have the back on the camera for this procedure, so you can at least observe exactly what is happening and verify that everything is okay - or not, as the case may be.

It looks like it,but I'll carry on trying to take some nice shots and then if it happens again, i will play about with the roll. I have to say I absolutely loved using the camera, despite of what happened. It is also very strange that people seem to not notice me as much when I am using it,odd but good because I can capture those natural moments.
I absolutely love the rangefinder now and kick myself for not buying one before. Tomorrow, I'm gone again with it with a couple of rolls of film!

    The 3 short strokes!!!

...not what the filthy minded of you are thinking!!!
The issue that the camera had was because I was not following the guidelines for loading film in the cmaera. When you get a film out of the camera and load another, apparently you need to give 2 to 3 short strokes with the advance lever, not full strokes. This seems to make the camera reengage the shutter mechanism, after you have unloaded and then loaded a new film in. Glad that is sorted!! (please forgive any typos as I am using my PDA as my laptop is currently dead and I am away from my servers).
