Has anyone got any idea why Sony have brought out a 50mm F1.8 when they already have a 1.4? Is there anything different about this lens than just stopping the 1.4 down?
It's a light weight DT lens (for APS-C sensors only - does not cover full frame) with SAM (Smooth Auto Focussing motor built into the lens).
It's quite an interesting point although, as Roger explains, there is a different reason in this case. Olympus Zuiko lenses used to come as 50mm f1.2, f1.4 and f1.8 plus two 50mm macros of f2 and f3.5. On top of that was the 40mm f2 which I think was a pancake and a 55mm f1.2. The standard lenses all took 49mm filters and although they got bigger and heavier as the aperture increased it wasn't by that much. The cost difference was, however significant and I guess that was the issue. They are all tiny compared with my current Sony lenses.Has anyone got any idea why Sony have brought out a 50mm F1.8 when they already have a 1.4?
