new at this

im so new at this photograhy thing and i'm pretty sure everyone here knows a lot so i was wondering if i could get some advice. Well i just bought a Sony A200 from a friend of mine. and its pretty much brand new maybe a year old but hardly ever used. anyways. he didn't give me the manual for it so i'm lost. im really interested in photography. With the A200 i got extra lens and a few filter. but i wouldn't know when to use the filters. and with all the functions on the camera i'm so confused!!!

Hi. Welcome to the forum

I would also advise you buy a book by Gary Friedman. You can purchase it here . Just scroll down until you find A200. I have the books for the A100 and A350, which I think are better than the Sony manuals.

Look forward to seeing some pics.
FRIPN. Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

Get the down load manual don't spend any money on a specific one for the camera. Rather buy a good book on general photography. You'll not find any info in a manual that'll teach you about photography other than how to use the camera. You can find a reasonably good book in your library, so money saved to buy a filter or two.

As Rog says you can download the manual, which although far from being a rivetting read & helpful can point you in the right direction about settings etc. Personally I've never yet come across a decent Camera Manual.

I've bought several apparently good Alpha Books & to be honest some are other people's opinions/instructions, some are from the states and others are just a glossy version of the Sony Manual, Gary Friedman's books do look fantastic however the price put me off straight away, yes you can download it, but how much (time & money) to print it off ?. The B&w version is the cheapest hard copy, but how much of a learning aid a b&w photography book can be, I don't know ?.

A good photography book would, I feel, be more benefical, ironically despite buying several books it is a magazine that's helped me the most (WDC close your eyes); I get Digital Photo Magazine Which as well as featuring some very useful tips & guides comes with a tutorial cd, of course, IMHO the Mag's not as good as WDC

As for a decent photography book, sadly you'd have to ask those wiser than I, Amazon would be a good place start;

Amazon Photography Books

I bought The Digital Photography Handbook for less than a fiver, and IMHO found it more helpful than the £10+ Alpha books I bought & promptly got rid of.

Amazon's Reader reviews/ratings do help.

Good Luck.
