    Old Sigma Lens

I have a Sigma F2.8 70-200mm zomm lens (trombone type) which I will be upgrading later in the year.

I have a potential buyer for this lens, but I remember reading on these forums, that the newer Sony DSLR's motor drives are too strong for older Sigma lens.

The buyer has just got an A700.

Is this true that the motor on A700 may be to strong for this Sigma lens, causing the gearing on the lens to break? Obviously I don't want to sell this lens if after a couple of weeks, it breaks and he asks for his money back.

The lens has worked fine, so far, on both my A100 and A350.
FRIPN. Never argue with an idiot. They'll drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

    Re: Old Sigma Lens

There are loads of stories about the A700 stripping gears on old Sigma lenses, but, I have a Sigma 400mm f5.6 non apo/macro that I bought way back in 1990 and it works just as well on my A700 and Dynax 7d. as it used to on the 700i and 7xi bodies I had in the days of film.

Either I am the lucky one or the gears in my lens are made of stronger stuff.

I use the fast focus speed option on my A700 by the way.

Going through the reports on various forums it seems to be the Sigma 70-300mm F4-5.6 DG APO Macro which is most prone to gear stripping.

I have had it happen to the Sigma 105 and 24-70. The latter was repaired with newer stronger parts but I now set the AF to slow on the A700 when using the Sigma lenses and I can't say I've noticed any difference.
