    ERROR 99

I had this "error 99" message flash up on my camera (EOS 40D) saying that to turn off and on the camera and it should be ok. That I did and it worked ok for a while, then it happened again, I tried taking off and cleaning the lens and removing and cleaning the battery grip BG-E2N and it was the same. It only worked properly when I took off the battery grip and used just one battery - is this (error 99) a dirty contact error message or is it something more sinister?

    Graham,

'Error 99' is specified by Canon as an unknown error. As there have been numerous threads on here, try a search with your thread title. If the 40D is relatively new, take it back to where you bought it and see what they say.

    Good Luck.

    Re: ERROR 99

It seems to be a 'sink' error, and can arise from several causes. I've detailed my experiences of getting this error on an almost new EOS1000 below [a Comedy of Error 99] and two trips to the Canon service centre failed to cure the problem. Don't believe people who tell you it means 'dirty contacts', it might do and it might not.

Hope you get it sorted out.
