    rolleiflex...film loading

Hi guys, having trouble loading the rolleiflex....

you load bottom to top .....so why does the silver spindle thingy behind the take up spool go the other way?

the counter doesnt seem to be working when film is in there? if i run my finger over it it works.....

    does that make sense?

    help help help

    Hi Snowqueen,

I've just loaded an old backing paper into my Rolleicord Vb to observe what goes on. The "silver spindle thingy" is the film spacing counter, and is rotated by the other side of what collects on the take-up spool. After setting the start of film marker - the broad arrow running from side to side across the backing paper - against the two red marks at the side of the film chamber, you then wind on, and quite a long length of backing paper is wound through before the start of the film proper is in place. Several turns of the knob on my 'cord, and probably a few rotations of the lever on the 'flex.

(It goes the the other way round because of basic geometry.)

    Hope this helps.

    Have fun.

You say "Rolleiflex" rather than "Rolleicord", which is important - loading a Rolleiflex (apart from very early ones) is a bit different to any other 120 camera including all the Rolleicords, as there's a patent "automatic" loading system ("Automat"). Basically, you have to pass the film between the first set of rollers before fitting it to the take-up spool, then the camera sorts everything out for you - you just close the back and wind on to shot one. There's a very fumbly video here - it's easier than he makes it look - a guide here and a manual here.

Taking the lead from Nick (I was thrown by your description of the "thingy" which aligned all too easily with what I could see in my 'cord Vb), here's two illustrated web-pages to follow.

From Diana to Rolleiflex in what, a month? I'm deeply jealous! Does this mean my Holga will evolve into a Horseman 612 given time?

Are we about to have a medium format camera-porn thread? If so, I'm going to grab a cup of tea and some nibbles, and make myself comfortable!

Okay, I'm game - I'll get my tackle out.

Here's my beloved Mamiya 6, with a couple of its lenses:

And here's something a little less modern - my 1934 Zeiss Super Ikonta C (picture's a little too big for the forums).

Well, Nick is your source for information on Rolleiflexes. My guess is that it's probably during or just shortly before WW2. The lens is a Carl Zeiss lens of Tessar type, but it's coated, which means it could be no earlier than the late 1930s, and it was made at the Jena plant - Jena was in East Germany after the war, and although they carried on making lenses, I don't suppose Rollei (in West Germany) were still sourcing them from there rather than from the hastily re-established Carl Zeiss company in the west. They may have had some residual inventory, of course. But as I say, Nick should be able to help.
