    Colormunki & Projectors

I have clients that work in a colour managed environment and use 'LCD' projectors to give presentations to their clients. We have had long discussions regarding colour management vis. AdobeRGB / SRGB and Windows RGB, obviously for proofing they convert the colour space to suit the final output be it web, video or printed page. The problems we have are regarding PowerPoint presentations when they pitch to clients, and how the colours are projected.
I have set up their existing projectors by eye using a grey scale and colour patch jpg. though this is better it is still not right.
I propose to replace the existing LCD projector with a Mitsubishi DMD machine with an extended colour space ( it uses RGB plus yellow and white in the colour wheel costs about £2.5K) and make profiles with the colormunki for their workstation.
My question is, has anyone here profiled a reasonable quality projector with a colormunki and if so how successful was it?

Our club has just bought a £2000 Canon projector, sorry cannot recall the model (80SX ??), but we are going to buy a colormunki for calibration. It may be overkill, but I will let you know how things progress. At the moment it is too bright and is blowing highlights on images that look fine on a calibrated monitor.

Thanks David I would be very interested to know how you get on with it, as with most of my projects things are progressing very slowly. I have been told by one re-seller that the software shipped with the Color Munki is not suitable for use with projectors and that an additional licence has to be purchased, you may wish to check with Xrite before you purchase.
From experience with modern mid priced projectors, they do tend to ship with very high contrast and brightness as do LCD / plasma TVs. We often find that setting to an 'eco' or low lamp brightness (if available) not only increases lamp life and reduces cooling fan noise, but also tames some of the contrast.

I'm curious to hear if you succeeded in getting a better projection with the ColorMunki.
I'm afraid that using powerpoint is not a good idea. Not all programs are capable to extract the icc-profile from the image and do the correct color conversion.

    Hi Wilburke
We ended up having a colour profile made for a Mitsubishi XD3200 by one of their distributors, the results were good but not very different to setting up the projector visually. On the back of this we sold and installed two XD3200s and they are considering a third install in the autumn, though they are not having them profiled or buying a Colormunki.
Conclusion. For a mid priced, about £2K, projector the Mitsubishi (IMO) is the one to go for.

We found that the cm did the trick, but it needed to be set up exactly as the instructions, that is to say, the proper distance from the screen.
