    70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM - Any good?

    Hello all,

Does anyone know where I can find a decent review of the 70-400mm F4-5.6 G SSM, or has anyone had a go with one? All I can find on other forums is people complaining about the colour, and to be honest, if it's a good lens I don't really care what colour it is.

    Cheers,

    Gareth.

    Gareth,

Here is a link to a users perspective of the lens including a good number of images

Also here is A link to the review of the lens on dyxum.com

And the lens review on Photozone.de

Hopefully these are of help, got to admit If money were of no object then I'd be getting one, however, until I win the lottery it is added to the ever growing wish/lust list

    Amen to that.

Has anyone ever tested this against the 70-200mm G with 2x TC? I don't know if I would prefer the convenience of having 70-400 in one lens rather than having to add the TC, or the benefit of having F2.8 up until 200mm.

As for anyone complaining about the colour, I THINK Sony decided on Silver because although it is a professional grade G lens, it doesn't have the constant 2.8 aperture.

To be honest, the 70-200 with a 2x TC produces poor quality images IMO. I have the converter sitting on a shelf at home and it will ptobably never be used again. I would try and sell it but I am an honest person and would have to tell any prospective buyer wh y I was selling it.

Cheers for those Ron. Certainly looks like a sharp piece of glass. Now, can I justify splashing that kind of cash?

If only I could fix the euromillions...

I bought the 70-300G because it was compact and all black. Works well but if you can carry it the 70-400G is very tasty.
