Moment of Madness - the sequel!

I have a public confession to make - I chickened out!

I no longer have a new Nikon S3 on order.

A week of fantastic New Zealand "vistas" has convinced me I need a D700 with a decent wide angle.

Also my son said "I think that was a particularly stupid decision" "You say you'd like a D700, but can't afford it and then buy a camera you can't use without devaluing it!"

There is a lot of sense in what he says and Grays (Bless 'em) agreed with no fuss & bother.

So all I now need is a decent wide angle - a lot easier to buy at an affordable price for a full frame I hope.

So slight loss of face on here - but worth it?

How wide do you want to go? I have a Sigma 12-24 and on FF, that's W-I-D-E! To be honest, it's almost TOO wide at the wide end but for thew times you want or need to go there, I'm not sure there's any real alternative (for FF) apart from the Nikon 14-24 at about twice the price. If 24 is wide enough for you, I can also recommend the Sigma 24-70. Jessops are selling off the last of their stocks of the non-HSM version for £342.54 - a considerable saving over the WHE price of £428.99.

    Enjoy the D700 - I know I do!

24mm "Too Wide" umm, I have the Nikkor 24-70 F2.8, and I find that it's not wide enough for me, I'd like the 14-24mm but at the moment it's a bit too much wonga.

No matter what lens you use (I have a sigma made lens as well not the 24-70) which is also a good performer, you will love the D700, I do.

Read the whole post - "almost TOO wide at the wide end". I also sometimes use a fisheye when 12mm just isn't wide enough!

Thanks for your suggestions. I used to think the 35mm on my old Nikon FE was wide enough, but the 28mm equivalent on my (Sigma 17-50mm f2.8) used on my D300 seemed heaps wide enough - that is until I'd seen New Zealand.

Now I think 24mm would be about right (not too keen on the fisheye concept - sorry Nod)

I used my 12-24 a fair bit at the wide end last week - it's always liberating to get that wide if you've got a suitable subject.

Paul, nice though the S3 undoubtedly is, I think you made absolutely the right decision.

I didn't want to say anything because I didn't want to spoil the obvious pleasure that you had in anticipating the S3, but it's not that long since Robert White was flogging them off for £1500 with the 50mm f/1.4 - I very nearly succumbed myself. The model that was going for £3800 more recently was the re-released black SP with 35mm f/1.8 - a much more desirable camera, IMO. If I'd been rolling in money I'd have grabbed three of them - two to use and one spare.

Still, no harm done, eh? I'm sure you've made the sensible decision. It's just a pity 'sensible' isn't always the most fun!
