    neg/slide scanner recommendation £500 Budget

    I need a recommendation for a 35mm neg/slide scanner with a budget of £500.

I was hoping to get a Nikon LS50 V Coolscan but this model has now been discontinued, it's the same with Minolta and Canon. There seems to be no models available at my budget, any idea on why these manufactures have stopped manufacturing mid range scanners?

The only scanners that now seem available are either a Plustek or a Reflecta RPS 7200. Are these scanners any good? or any recommendations for an alternative scanner?

I am after a dedicated film scanner not a flatbed scanner.

Would a Canon FS2710 be of any use to you? I know where there's one going for a 1/4 of your budget.

You did ask for an alternative as well. I have a minolta scan elite 5400 and the epson gets better results and quicker.

Re: neg/slide scanner recommendation £500 Budget

I am still in the quest to find a film scanner. I already have an Epson 4990 flat bed, so I was dubious to go for a new Epson V700/750 flatbed like a forum member suggested.

I always assumed that a dedicated film scanner was far superior to a flat bed scanner. But looking at some of the reviews for an Epson V700/750 I may be wrong?

Please could someone confirm if the V700/750 is as good as they say, and it matches the quality of a dedicated film scanner like a Relecta RPS7200?

I have not used a Reflecta RPS7200 so I would not know how it compares with the V700. My V700 was a replacement for a Plustec 7200, the V700 is a bit sharper and deals with a much higher density range before it starts to 'posterise' the under exposed areas.

Link (500K!!!!) to crop of approximatly 50% of an APX400 35mm neg.

It depends what you want to do with the output but for web use and printing up to A3 I do like my V700. Though not a factor for you, I occasionally use medium format so the versatility of a flat bed was appealing, well more so than spending £2k plus on the big Nikon.
