I remember browsing through his 'Secret Life of an Oakwood' soon after it was published (there had been some articles in the photo mags covering his work as well) and finding it absolutely breathtaking. Sadly I was going back to being an impoverished student at the time and couldn't afford it. I really ought to have rectified that in the intervening years. :-(

Not sure how I'd managed to miss his work before but I'm glad to have seen it now. Then again he's been at it since before I was born and by the sounds of things has been famous for longer than I've been taking pictures.

There's a tough decision to be made though...what book next

He seems to have dropped off the radar somehow - back in the 80s and maybe a bit into the 90s (I can't really remember now) he was everywhere. Then nothing. I hadn't come across him in years until I read your post. Then I went and found his website, and the section on 'Books and Exhibitions' just contains a picture of a pile of books, and some mention of his latest one. I guess he's not big on self-promotion!

Still, if that means he's just quietly getting on with his photography instead of making himself into some blogging guru then more power to his elbow!

It's as though he somehow went out of fashion - at one time, if you asked any amateur to name a wildlife photographer, their answer would be "Stephen Dalton and Heather Angel", I suspect. I would think his decline in fame coincides pretty neatly with the rise of Andy Rouse.

Andy who? Have admired some of his bird shots but....

He also admits he is 'crap' (his word, not mine!) at macro so doesn't bother as there are plenty of others who can do it so much better.

That and you can use AF and AE for bird shots (how many FPS and AF points?). I expect there is a massive difference in technique between Dalton and Rouse aswell as the subject matter. The only similarity I see is the depth of knowledge of their chosen subjects to put themselves in the right place at the right time....I want to get good at that too
