I currently use Elements 3 with a few plug-ins (ACR, Curves, B&W conversion) on a five year old IBM ThinkPad laptop (provided for my work). I have no idea how much RAM it has or how 'powerful' it is, so my question is this ... should I take a chance on loading Elements 7, or will everything just grind to a standstill? I shall be purchasing a 'proper' computer and peripherals when I retire in September; should I wait until then before going for Elements 7?

That really depends on how desparate you are to upgrade your software. Is V3 not doing what you want?
You can alwways download the trial version from the Adobe site and see if it runs. If it does then you can purchase it and carry on.

Thanks for your comments David .. I'm sure I can happily use v3 for a few more months! My daughter has v7 and is loathe to let me try it because she believes it can only be registered three times. Not quite sure what she's talking about because I've reloaded my v3 numerous times since I've had it, due to the fact that whenever my laptop needs to be sorted for some glitch or another, the office IT chaps always wipe my C:\ drive! As long as I enter the long string of numbers each time it seems to be OK. Any thoughts?

By the time you retire in September a new version will have been released. This usually happens the day after I have moved up to that being superseded

Life, is only as complicated, or as serious, as you want it to be - your choice.
Regisering it and reinstalling it are two entirely different things. I think that Adobe usually allow you to install the software at home and at work on your desktops and onto one laptop. Hence three seperate sites as legal copies.
You can reinstall the software, as you say, by typing in the serial number on any one of the three legal sites as often as you wish.

You will need a minimum of 1Gb Ram for PSE7 or you will find it like wading through molasis especially if you use the Organizer.
Keep on snapping and catch the moment if you can.
