Doel is a village in the vicinity of Antwerp, lying beside the major Schelde River that brings goods from southwest germany, belgium and france to the port of Antwerp, and beyond.

It is also under the shadow of a major nuclear plant that provides 48% of belgium's energy

The village is under threat because the Port of Antwerp wants to expand and Doel is in the way. So, in spite of the few difficult remaining residents, the village has mostly been abandoned. And the village is slowly being demolished (and vandalised) - photographers can access most of the houses to see abandonment, dereliction and decay - before the village is due to disappear - by the end of september 2009 (but for the remaining residents)....

My photography club has been there on an outing, and a number of belgian clubs have descended on Doel... if decay and dereliction is your thing - ie giving the impression of homes post-annihilation - head to Doel before it disappears...

I've taken shots but since they are on film and not yet posted to Peak - there are plenty of shots on Alamy or Flickr...
