    Hitachi HDC-851E problem

    Hi folks

i'm getting a venetian blind effect on pitures , the diplay /view finder is OK so i'm wondering if it's a lens or sensor problem. some pics the lines are very thick & it looks totally out of focus. The camera is 3 months out of warranty

    any ideas help much appreciated

If the display and finder are OK (it's an electronic viewfinder I presume) this tends to suggest that the lens and sensor are fine and that the problem is one of file accuracy.

Have you tried formatting the card in camera? If the card's file system has gotten corrupted a reformat can often cure the problem. If it still persists try another card to see if the card itself has failed.

If you are already seeing the problem on more than one card this may point to a write/communication error either between the card and camera or card and reader/PC if you use a card reader. If you are downloading directly from the camera via cable link it could equally be the cable. Check all connections (where possible) and see if they are clean and uncorroded.

    apologies to the mods
the pictures are the same using the internal memory.when i'm framing a subject it's perfect on the lcd display, its just viewing the picture i get the lines

now i've just tried taking some video & that has played back fine

but i'll give formatting a try.
My pc has a built in card reader, so i transfer straight from that

Hmmm... I would generally expect a sensor fault to show up in the live view mode and that fact that you can get a normal video recording would suggest that the sensor is acting normally.

Video is recorded under a different format (probably MPEG but possibly .mov or .avi) and the fact that they are OK almost seems to point a finger at the JPEG processing routine. If a card format doesn't make any difference - and I'm less optimistic now - it sounds like a call to Hitachi's customer service people may be required...

i think the video is .avi format, so it does sound like the jpeg side of things. it could be a call to hitachi
