I am not sure the item has ever existed although Tim may tell me differently. Finding one secondhand therefore may be difficult.

Yes, they sure do exist Summicron-M 28mm f2 ASPH. Only £2.550,00 new (but with a 15% cashback) - I've seen one used (Ffordes IIRC) at just over £2k.
Peter, I'm surprised - the beast is here in all its glory!
They don't come up that often on the used market. As it happens there is one listed at the Leicashop in Vienna, but they're asking not far off what the OP would have to pay for a brand new one in the UK. All I can advise is to keep your eyes open Jackie

Nothing used at ffordes, but new ones there are £2269. I'm unsure whether that price is inclusive of the 15% cashback offer running until the end of this month IIRC.Yes, they sure do exist Summicron-M 28mm f2 ASPH. Uh! I've just remembered - Ffordes had a 28/2 Ultron s/h but it sold before I could pawn a child/dog/camera. The Leica 28/2 must've been somewhere else - possibly Vienna. It's not the sort of thing that I'd ever pay much real attention to.
Added: Ffordes internet price has the cashback deducted. I was sort of tempted by a Leica bino deal but don't want a pair of "cheapo" glasses as a freebie![]()
The price at Richard Caplan, who can normally be relied upon to charge top prices is an eye-watering £2,635.00. Plus postage.
What's really striking about ffordes secondhand list is how little there is there. Lots of ageing 90s and 135s and that's about it. What stock they do have includes samples with fungus and balsam separation.
I'm sure Tim will be able to explain why there's so little - everything snapped up because of the increase in new prices or nobody selling, just sitting on their hands?

Oi! Norton. It weren't me who snapped it all up.I'm sure Tim will be able to explain why there's so little - everything snapped up because of the increase in new prices or nobody selling, just sitting on their hands?
Probably the best guess is like you say, that people have been buying before the price hike strikes, or maybe the foreign chappies have been flocking over here (physically or otherwise) to snap up those bargain-priced Brit bits; boot currently very much on the other foot it seems.

Yes, that's another angle - buyers taking advantage of the collapse in the pound to buy UK stock. In any event, ffordes secondhand stock looks a bit feeble, doesn't it?

You are right Tim/Mark, there is a distinct lack of decent SH gear out there especially 'M'. I have never seen Ffordes with so little choice. Red Dot, Classic Camera and Caplans are all as badly off.
A decent overview of the SH market would be a reasonable article for the mag don't you think? Many on these forums buy secondhand in all makes. Could be worth a look.

I suspect there are numerous reasons. The price of new kit is getting difficult for many. People aren't p/exing their lenses as much - nobody's buying, and nobody's selling. People are buying more s/h kit. Foreigners are buying it. The M8 has stimulated demand. People are putting their money in used Leicas instead of shares or banks. Any or all of these, and probably many similar reasons. What I've not checked is if more Leica stuff is going on ebay than before, which might explain it.
I sold some good Leica-M stuff on ebay a year or two ago: every lens went abroad (USA x2, Netherlands, Singapore)and all before the 'devaluation' of the £.
"Leica stuff is going on ebay..."
I didn't find much when looking for Leica and Bessa stuff last night.

There's definitely a surfeit of 90s and 135s out there, it's true. Some lenses that, whilst not flooding the used market in years past, were not uncommon have now become like hen's teeth almost - the pre-asph 35mm Summilux and pre-asph 50mm Summilux being the two that spring to mind. Prices on some of the old lenses have gone way up compared to just a few years back. The 35 'lux mentioned before used to be sold for around £700 in good condition, now it's usually more like £1200.Well, at least my ignorance has got folks talking in here![]()
