    Problems viewing CR2 in Photoshop

    Hello!

    I feel like a right novice ...

I have recently purchased a Canon 50D, and a Kingston 133X 16GB CF Card...the one that selling suspiciously cheaply at the moment (I'm beginning to wonder why).

I shoot both JPEG and RAW, and have done so with my 300D with no problems when uploading. But with the 50D I don't seem to be able to view the RAW files in Photoshop.

They show up in in their folders, I can see what the image is of, and they open fine in Canon Digital Photo Professional, but not in Photoshop.

I have Photoshop CS2, I'm wondering if it has something to do with this being outdated.

If anyone can shed some light on why this is happening I would be extremely grateful. There is about a 100% chance I'm doing something wrong!

    Thanks in anticipation,

    P

You might be able to download the latest version of 'Adobe Camera RAW' (or named something similar) from the Adobe website.

That should have the updates in for the 50D. Details will be on their website.

As for the Kingston CF card, they're perfectly okay

Well that's a relief, just rather frustrating! I shall have a gander at the adobe site. The computer does not seem to be my friend today!

    Thank you once again

In this instance I think the only route still open with CS2 is to convert via DNG

Indeed, 50D RAW files require ACR version 5.1 and Photoshop CS4. You could purchase Photoshop Elements v6.0 or 7.0 and either would be OK.

I see...I've just read it and it's downloading... do you think it will compromise the quality of the image?

    CS4 = Mightily Expensive

Thanks for your advice guys, really helpful x

    No.

Yes, but there is a (cheaper, but still not cheap) upgrade from CS/CS2/CS3 available.

The other option is to convert to TIFF or whatever in DPP, then do whatever else you need in Photoshop.

If it doesnt compromise the quality I may just stick with converting to DNP for now...although I've dealt with TIF files before. At least I can open them now!

    Thanks

Re: Problems viewing CR2 in Photoshop

When you have opened your raw files in CS2 bridge as DNG and after you have tweaked then there, you can then save them as uncompressed tiff files and work on copies of these in Photoshop. You will not loose any quality regardless of how many times you open and save them, unlike jpegs. if you do not like your adjustments you can use the History palette to reverse them or make another copy of your tiff you created from the adjusted raw file.
