Having established that it's possible to add Curves to Elements 3, I now wonder if it's possible to add a Channel Mixer too? (I don't plan to buy a later version of Elements until the autumn)
Has anyone done it?

I was going to say try the plug-in Smartcurve but I think it only works with Elements 4 and above?
I've just installed Smart Curves to my Elements 3.0.1 and it's there under the Filter drop down selection, as the guidelines said it would be, and it works just fine.
However, that doesn't help me with a Channel Mixer ... or does it? Am I missing something here, now that Smart Curves is installed?

Not quite a channel mixer but I've used this one and it does the job pretty well - though the interface could use some work...

I've just installed this piece of software and it seems to do a decent job of B&W conversions. It's a shame that not only is the preview picture rather small, but neither can you zoom into any part of the image and move it around with the hand tool .. it just zooms in to the middle somewhere, which isn't quite as helpful as one would like! Is this what you meant by your interface comment?- though the interface could use some work...

Possibly it's changed since I installed mine but with the version I have you can zoom into 100% and then you move the image by moving the mouse cursor over the image where it turns into a fine cross. To move the image about press and hold the left mouse button and the fine cross turns into a large one made of four arrows then, while holding the button down, drag the image about (Note the image reverts to colour during this stage).but neither can you zoom into any part of the image and move it around with the hand tool .. it just zooms in to the middle somewhere, which isn't quite as helpful as one would like!
Mainly with regards to the interface I was referring to it's rather cramped nature and that the sliders could do with being a bit bigger to give finer control.
Other than that it does work remarkably well.

Having had another look I can tell you that things haven't changed at all .. I followed your instructions with the cross wires and the mouse clicking etc. and all is well; as you say, it could all be a bit bigger, but then it's a freebie and not official Photoshop anyway, so mustn't grumble!
