I recently heard a radio programme which mentioned salmon leaping somewhere near Settle. Does anyone know where this might be? And displaying my ignorance of natural history, when? I'd guess late spring maybe May-ish?
Thanks
JH

Might I respectfully suggest that you ask a fisherman?
If you're not living on the edge, you're wasting space
I'd think that suggesting Google would be far more useful.Might I respectfully suggest that you ask a fisherman?
See here.
It seems that October is the time to go. If I rememeber, I'd like to go myself.

Sorry but I think the local fishermen may know the local conditions at least as well as whoever posts stuff onto the 'net for Google to find. And you're not in competition with them, or directly buying tourist services from them.I'd think that suggesting Google would be far more useful.Might I respectfully suggest that you ask a fisherman?
I also suspected that the OP may have tried googling and not got anything relevant.
And - not being an expert on fish or the area in question - I'd have kept my trap shut altogether if anyone else had bothered themselves to reply to the OP.

Not sure of any locations in the UK but I used to enjoy watching leaping salmon as a young lad in Ireland in the month of November.
I don't know anything about Settle but I can tell you that the best months are October and November after heavy rain. The adults swim up the rivers to spawn.
Buchanty Spout Easter Glenalmond near Crieff and Limm of Tummel near Pitlochry are excellent places to see salmon leap in Scotland (a fantastic place even without leaping salmon).
Sorry not to be of any use with regard to England.![]()

Oddly enough, those are the spots I would've recommended.
Not that the Ribble in that part of the Dales isn't very beautiful - it's wonderful, in fact.
Thanks all. Location seems to be Stainforth Force. I'll be up that way in late March so I'll check it out as a possible location and ask the locals. I would never have thought of autumn but as I know stuff all about the breeding habits of fish I'll take your advice!
Thanks,
JH
Clicky for a shot taken there, (not one of mine I hasten to add)
