    Goth Project Underway

Well, at long last I've got my Goth project underway.

I visited The Wendyhouse in Leeds (A goth nightclub) with my camera in tow and got a few shots.

Sadly I haven't mastered the art of low light shooting and I have had some problems with AF working correctly so a good number were out of focus.

Never mind, I will get better.

Anyway I thought I'd stick the details up here for folks to have a look at.

    Hi Steve,
I enjoyed looking at your photographs.
My only comment would be that they look like every other set of 'party' shots from night clubs involving young people.
For me, the flash kills the atmosphere, of everything.
You say you made some in low light but many were out of focus. I reckon these are possibly far stronger and more original than the above; who says pictures have to be sharp? And yes low light may mean an high ISO, but, does that matter? Who say pictures have to be free from noise?
One or two of the graveyard images I think are wonderful, a genuine sense of atmosphere created, but the people shots are pretty boring by comparison.
However, a great start, I would love to see some of the out-takes, I guarantee they are superior, albeit a little non-conformist, which is a good thing.
    All the best.

I've written this reply once, must have forgotten to commit...

    Anyway, here goes.

I used the flash for almost all the shots. The blur was because the AF on the lens/camera wouldn't lock accurately, so it's the worst of both worlds - Flash and blur!

I accept that they do look typical nightclub. The venue has been described as a fancy dress nightclub where some people dress up as Goths. Allthough it seems there are many varieties of Goth style so that may have been unkind. To some extent that was what I was after. I have another venue to do soon which is somewhat "grittier" so I may get some better and possibly more typical Goth styles.

I hoping I can get someone to do a photo shoot along the lines of "Goths in the Graveyard".

Anyway thanks for the encouragement. This is an early beginning to the project and I can keep everyone posted as things develop.

    Regards,

    Steve

I like the Graveyard photo's, the portrait picture's of people just freak me out though.

What i've picked up shooting in low light scenerio's is, use a lower apperture setting. The lowest mine goes to is around f/4. The lower the Apperture number (F number) the more light that enters the lens.

Also, try and use a lower shutter speed. This may create a bit of bluring behind the sharp image of the subject, but in Night club photographs, it prove's to be actually quite effective.

As with the Auto focus problem, try to shoot in manual focus. That's what I tend to do.

    I like the cobwebby grave.

I don't like the portraits. Potentially interesting subjects spoilt by the flat lighting. As suggested above, crank up the ISO rating, open up the aperture, focus manually and shoot by whatever ambient light is available. The shallow depth of field and camera shake could well add to the atmosphere.

I can't see them. Every time I try and scroll down the page, it jumps back up to the guy with the spinning orbs.

    Hi Steve
I'd try thinking about why people go to these places, or why they want to be different. Do you think they're a bit sad, do you think they look cool?
Check out Peter Beste's project: http://www.peterbeste.com/bm.html
I think a lot more work is being made about the black metal scene right now as obviosly it's a much more current 'in' topic and a really fascinating scene..
I know this might not go down well, but i'd think of maybe using high-speed film as often this is thought to be more attractive than digital noise.
I did a project last year at a club using 800speed 120 film and due to the size of the negative I was able to enlarge these to 30x30inch prints without the grain being too obvious. You'd be surprised how much detail can be caught with a hand-held 20second exposure!
